Gombe Stream Natioal Park; A mountainous strip which borders the shores of Lake Tanganyika, is Tanzania's smallest park. Covering only 52 sq km, Gombe Stream offers visitors the rare chance to observe chimpanzee communities made famous by British explorer Jane Goodall. The area is heavily forested making it unsuitable for larger carnivores and safe for walking safari. Particularly excellent for birdwatchers.
Katavi National Park; Tanzania's 3rd largest is noted for its Miombo woodland and is home to buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and zebra.Katavi boasts Tanzania's highest concentration of hippo and crocodile. Water fowl are abundant with Lake Chala particularly rich with over 400 species of bird life recorded. Only 150 visitors a year means that you can explore the area for days without seeing another vehicle.
Mahale Mountains National Park; Is the other sanctuary of the chimpanzee. Covering an area of approximately 1,000 sq km, bordering Lake Tanganyika, the chimpanzee population is estimated at 1,000, and may be observed in their natural habitat in groups up to 30. Other animals include buffalo, bush pig, elephant, giraffe, leopard, lion, porcupine and antelope.
Rubondo Island National Park; Comprises of Rubondo and 9 smaller islands tucked into a corner of Lake Victoria, providing a variety of habitats from savannah to open woodland, dense forest, papyrus swamps and sandy beaches. The bird life is unique with birds flocking from east, central and southern Africa to breed. Bee-eaters, fish eagle, ibis, kingfisher and saddle-billed stork can be seen.
